Grammy

I guess I must have been “Papa’s” boy when I was young because I don’t remember too many things about Grammy during my pre-school years.   What I do remember is very strange.   They had a Frigidaire refrigerator, the first one I ever remember seeing.   I think I was in the eighth grade before we ever got one.   I remember her making ice cream in the ice cube trays and I thought that was a special delight.

She was also the best cake maker I have ever known.   It was a special treat to be served cake on one of her green metal plates.   I still have one of those plates and it is a highly treasured keepsake.  She also had an upright piano which Jean kept until she moved away from Austin.   My son, Jim, has it now.

Grammy attended the Church of Christ in Hico.   She was quite vocal in her opinions about things that happened at church.   She had her ideas about how things ought to be done, and sometimes that differed with what actually took place.   However, she usually spoke highly of the preachers.  Most of the preachers didn’t last long.  Two years was about the maximum length of time they were allowed to stay.    I guess Grammy didn’t have time to learn too much about their warts.

There are those who say that I like to talk, and they have good reason for making that assessment.  My father used to say that he didn’t know what would become of me if I didn’t learn to make a living with my mouth.  I guess that’s one reason I chose to preach.  You have a lot of opportunity to talk.   Daddy was a big talker and so was Grammy.  I think Grammy had him bested.  She could talk non-stop for hours on end, rarely ever stopping to take a breath.  She talked at a rapid pace.  Unfortunately, much of it was negative.   Yet, I don’t ever recall her being harsh, or cruel or negative in her treatment of me.
