We moved to the Benton Place sometime in 1938. We left there and went to Abilene for about a year. We came back to the same place and left for good in 1941. These pictures were taken in 2010 – sixty-nine years after we left it. The same windmill is still standing. I remember having toy truck which I left by the watering trough. One of the horses stepped on it and crushed it to pieces. Daddy tried to put it back with bailing wire. Before duct tape bailing wire was the product that could fix anything.
The house had been a barn before we lived there. The enclosed part on the right had a floor in it, and that was our primary living area. I can’t believe how small it was as I look at this picture. The left side where the boards are now open was also enclosed, but it had a dirt floor. Basically we put stuff in there we didn’t need for daily living.
We had no electricity or running water. I don’t remember a whole lot about the Benton Place except for the fact that it was fairly close to the Katy railroad. Once in a while “tramps” or “hoboes” as they were known back then stopped by the house looking for something to eat. As poor as we were, we were still richer than some people. I think Mama usually found something to feed them.
