“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”
I didn’t see Ann very much after the singing for about a month. I came down with strep throat and was out of commission for awhile. I also made a trip to Abilene, and during that time I made two subsequent future dates with “old flames.”
After I got back from Abilene, I took Ann out on a real date. I’ll never forget what we did. We went to a movie. The movie was Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, and Burl Ives. It was based on a play written by Tennessee Williams (no relation to Ann). It was pretty steamy for the time, but tame by today’s standards. Ann was doing her best to impress this young preacher who asked her out. She wanted to say and do the right things. But what did I do? I asked, “What did you think of the movie?” It wasn’t an astute question, it was just the only thing I could think of the say. I don’t remember what she said, but I know my question embarrassed her.
As you can tell there were several missteps in the early days of our relationship. I seemed to be stumbling through social interaction. It still happens today, but somehow we got through the awkward moments and we saw quite a lot of each other after that.
