Sometime in 1968 Charles made the decision to leave Jamestown. There were several factors that contributed to his decision, not the least of which was the fact that his girls were getting older, and needed to have a different church experience. During the summer, Charles interviewed with the Brown Trail church in Hurst, Texas.
As he was getting ready to fly to Texas for the interview, we moved the old construction office away from the front of the property on Fairmount Avenue. We decided to use it to house the riding lawn mower and yard tools. Of course Charles, being the perfectionist he is, noticed that the building wasn’t level in its new location. He and I decided to take on the task of leveling it. At one point, we had to dig up dirt from underneath the structure to level the building. I started digging with my hands because there wasn’t room enough to get a shovel under it. Charles wanted to get a good look at the understructure of the building, so he decided to lie down on the ground in order to get a better look.
A day or so later, my arms and hands broke out with poison ivy rash. Poison ivy roots were in the ground. Charles got it on his face.
The day after it broke out, he had to fly to Texas for the interview. He face looked bad. Joyce was wondering what the people in the church would think about the way he looked. It must not have been a problem. Charles got the job.
