Our Children in the Eighties (4)

Our Family Increases

I didn’t get to see Audrey until the next fall.   Elliott, Melanie, and Audrey came to visit us in Cedar Rapids, and we all drove to Abilene for the ACU Homecoming.  From there we drove on to Nashville, where Elliott and Melanie were finally able to have a formal wedding ceremony.   After all the celebrating, we started home, dropping Elliott, Melanie, and Audrey off in St. Louis.

After completing their first tour of duty in Germany, they moved to El Paso where Elliott was stationed at Fort Bliss.  From there they went to Fort Hood, and in July of 1989, another person arrived to bless our family – Mr. Hunter Laurence Bales.

It was also during that year that Ann’s Aunt Lucy passed away.  She and Jim went to Waco for the funeral.   Before they returned home Hunter was born.    As things turned out, the two grandmothers – Nancy Jennings, and Ann were at Elliott and Melanie’s home when awaiting the birth of the baby.   Melanie and Elliott wanted the time of Hunter’s birth to be a special time for the two of them, so Ann and Nancy stayed at Elliott’s house with Audrey while Elliott and Melanie took care of business at the hospital.

Ann says they almost wore a hole in the floor pacing back and forth, but the big moment did arrive, and there was great joy in the Bales home.  I was a little impatient myself.  I couldn’t wait for the call, so I kept bugging them throughout the day with long distance call.  That was pre-email and pre-cell phone, so the old fashioned telephone on the wall was our only means of communication.

A whole new generation of Bales was formed in the eighties.   Our family increased and our lives were blessed.
